2017 marks the 300th anniversary of formation of the world’s first Grand Lodge for Freemasons in London. The temporary exhibition currently on display in the Community Gallery commemorates this event, sharing and explaining the intriguing and fascinating story behind Freemasonry, from the initial historic concept to the modern-day running of the fraternal organisation. It runs until the 31st of December.

In the 1930s plans for re-designing Scarborough as an Art Deco oasis were drawn up. A New Olympia: Designs on Scarborough explores the fascinating proposals of architect Stanley Davenport Adshead with his plans and photographs of the period. Come and reimagine Scarborough as a ‘Great Gatsby’ location.

Each week, meet the course leader in the Art Gallery to gather inspiration then head next door to Woodend to make your own artwork and try a range of techniques. The workshops are designed for both adults and children, with a chance to learn new skills and enjoy art together.

Outside the Box

Multiple locations across Scarborough

Free-of-charge Reminiscence sessions across Scarborough. Sessions are open to everyone and are an hour long. They take place once a month in 10 different locations, so look out for your local one!
The sessions will involve handling objects from the Scarborough Museums Trust collections, which all come from within living memory.

Scarborough Museums Trust is loaning two pieces of gilded cartonnage (coffin) from the Egyptology collection and an inlaid Egyptian eye from the William James Clarke Charm collection to Experience Barnsley. Their temporary exhibition, God’s Land in God’s Country: Ancient Egypt in Yorkshire is curated by well-known Egyptologist, Professor Joanne Fletcher and runs from the 23 September 2017 - 20 January 2018.
