It has been announced today that Scarborough will host either a start or a finish during the race weekend of 29 April to 1 May 2016. The actual route won’t be announced until December, but it is hoped the riders will once again get the chance to race through many fantastic parts of the borough.

Reaction to the news from our Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, Cllr Andrew Backhouse:

"We are delighted that the race organisers have chosen the Borough of Scarborough to host part of Tour de Yorkshire 2016. This year’s race experience was a triumph for all involved and to be given the chance to get a slice of the action for a second year running is fabulous news for the whole area. Not only will it be a thrilling spectacle for residents and visitors to watch and another economic boost for local businesses, the international attention and media coverage the race continues to attract is something money can’t buy. Once again, we’ll be able to show the world what a wonderful place the Yorkshire coast is.”

The other host towns announced are: Beverley, Doncaster, Middlesbrough, Otley and Settle.

The Tour de Yorkshire is organised and promoted by Amaury Sport Organisation and Welcome to Yorkshire with support from British Cycling and local authorities across Yorkshire. One and a half million people lined the route of the first Tour de Yorkshire earlier this year. It attracted top international cycling teams and was broadcast to over 150 countries around the world.

For a bit of fun, can you guess the route of next year’s race? Where do you think the race will start and finish on each day? Get your friends talking about it and then see how close your guesses are to the actual route when it is announced in two months' time. Good luck!
