As their summer season approaches, the Scarborough Spa Orchestra has announced a sparkling programme of gala concerts on Thursday evenings from the beginning of June to the middle of September.

The first of these will present the Orchestra in another guise.  Moonlight Serenade (Thur 8 June) will recreate the sound not of the symphony orchestra but of the popular 1940s dance bands, with special reference to Glenn Miller.

On other occasions the sound will be much more orchestral, but just as popular, especially when the theme is the music of Vienna and the Strauss family in particular (Thur 29 JunE).  These are the tunes that brought almost a thousand people into the Spa Grand Hall on New Year’s Day when the Spa Orchestra presented their annual Viennese concert.

Coming right up to date, A Night in the West End (Thur 13 July ) will include the best of musical theatre currently playing in London, together with a tribute to the master of the modern musical, Stephen Sondheim.

Guest singers feature throughout the summer on Thursday evenings, and three extremely popular programmes bring some great favourites to the Spa.  A Gilbert and Sullivan evening (Thur 27 July    ) will be led once again by Richard Suart, in demand on both sides of the Atlantic as simply the best performer of G and S comic songs.  Always greeted with cheers are the Spa Orchestra’s soloists for Three Tenors at the Spa (Thur 17 August)  and back by public demand because the tunes are so irresistible is an evening of Ivor Novello’s show (Thur 24 August) songs.

A special feature this year will be a 100th birthday tribute to Dame Vera Lynn (Thur 6 July), led by soprano Samantha Holden who made a great impression when she appeared in a Scarborough Library lunchtime concert recently.  And more songs that everyone knows will be heard in a programme devoted to the shows and films of Rodgers and Hammerstein (Thur 10 August).

The Orchestra will have some gala nights to themselves.  In addition to Moonlight Serenade, they will present an evening called On the Lighter Side (Thur 15 June) which will feature the very best of light music. Orchestral Showstoppers (Thur 3 August) will show the musicians at their exciting best with a spectacular selection of show pieces.  And, just for fun, there will be a musical quiz night (Thur 31 August).

More evening concerts on Mondays and Wednesdays will show off the Orchestra’s vast repertoire of music in a variety of guises, and morning concerts Sundays to Thursdays will be bright and breezy, light and entertaining, with the accent on good tunes.

No other orchestra in the land can present such a huge variety of music in over 130 different concerts over 15 weeks.  But then, this is the legendary Scarborough Spa Orchestra!
