Scarborough's annual Jazz Festival has heightened its reputation as one of the country's premier music festivals after winning 'Jazz Venue of the Year' at this year's Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

After recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, the festival, which is held every September at Scarborough Spa, beat off some strong competition at an award ceremony at 'Pizza Express Live' in London on Tuesday evening.

The festival has grown in stature since its inception, becoming one of the country's most in demand jazz festivals by both concert goers and artists alike thanks to the incredible line ups put together by festival director Mike Gordon plus the beautiful Victorian venue of Scarborough Spa's Grand Hall with its stunning back drop of Scarborough's South Bay.

'Jazz Wise' recently put prestige on the festival comparing it to the world renowned “North Sea Jazz Festival” and Jazz Journal stated that ~few U.K. Festivals have come anywhere near the calibre of Scarborough in terms of variety of programming, professional organisation and quality of setting”.

The festival began in 2003 and has grown to a 3 day event with a host of fringe events and has seen performances from the likes of Jamie Cullum, Claire Teal, Stan Tracey, Courtney Pine, Nigel Kennedy and Kyle Eastwood over the years.

This year's festival saw jazz music lovers flock to Scarborough Spa from as far as Finland, Germany and Spain as well as from all over the UK to enjoy performances from a great assortment of established and upcoming acts with performances from Mads Mathias, Polly Gibbons, Get The Blessing, Issie Barrat's Dectet and conductor's Mike Gibbs' 80th birthday celebrations amongst the highlights.

Jo Ager, General Manager of the festival's venue Scarborough Spa was delighted with the award win stating "This is a great accolade for my team who work extremely hard in conjunction with the festival director to deliver an innovative festival year on year. The Festival is a fundamental part of the town's events and entertainments programme bringing visitors from all the world to Scarborough and has helped extend the tourist season over the past 15 years. We look forward to further success".

Next year's festival will take place over the weekend of 28-30 September 2018 at Scarborough Spa and jazz fans can take advantage of the 'Super Earlybird Weekend' ticket offer until the end of October.

Tickets are available from Scarborough Spa’s Box Office on 01723 821 888 and online at www.scarboroughspa.co.uk
