Three new movies have been added to the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s summer programme – including this summer’s big family blockbuster, The BFG, on its UK release date.

In Sing Street (4 to 7 July), a boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980s escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes. Ferdia Walsh-PeeloAidan Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy star.

Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny play Susan and Alicia in Whit Stillman’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s short novel Lady Susan. Love and Friendship (15 to 21 July) sees Lady Susan Vernon take up temporary residence at her in-laws' estate and matchmake for both her daughter Frederica and herself.

The family blockbuster of the summer is a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG (22 July to 4 August), in which a girl named Sophie encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kindhearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because he refuses to eat children. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Mark Rylance stars as the BFG, with Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Rafe Spall, and Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement.

The BFG also stars Scarborough-born actress Penelope Wilton, and Breaking Bad star Adam Godley, who appeared in many shows at the SJT in the 1980s, including Alan Ayckbourn’s Mr A’s Amazing Maze Plays and The Revengers’ Comedies.
