The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby, as well as the whalebone arch that sits at the top of the West Cliff.

The original erected in 1853 is now displayed in a local museum, a replica from Norway was presented to Whitby in 1963 another replacement occurred in 2003 and was donated by Alaska.
